The Student Steel Bridge Competition is an annual event where student teams are tasked with designing and constructing a scale-model steel bridge. The competition involves various challenges, including determining the fabrication process and efficiently assembling the bridge within a time limit. Once completed, the bridges undergo load testing and are weighed. These bridges are required to span approximately 20 feet and carry a load of 2,500 pounds while adhering to specific competition rules. In addition to structural performance, the aesthetics of the bridge are also evaluated and contribute to the final results.
The competition’s mission is to provide students with a practical, hands-on experience that extends their classroom knowledge in steel design. It aims to promote the development of interpersonal and professional skills, foster innovation, and facilitate meaningful connections between students and industry professionals.
